Doctors And Food

I just got the bill from the dietician for nutritional counseling for my son. It is three hundred and forty dollars. She made him cry, and we had to leave before she actually DID anything.

It is not covered by insurance.

Insurance pays for every complication of obesity, except one: for the psychological counseling for the effects of bullying on my son about his weight.

The counselor is 'Out-Of-Network'. She is ordinarily one hundred fifty dollars an hour, but gives a discount for the school referral, so her fee is one hundred thirty dollars. That's two hours a week, one for me, and one for him, so she can get the information she needs to manage his care properly.

He is responding beautifully to her intervention for his mental health.

(the payments do not even apply to my deductible...)

There is an OB Gyn who has lost over one hundred pounds in three months. It is medically supervised, and in his words, 'was designed by someone really smart like an anesthesiologist -- <3 --who does critical care...I eat every three hours, and keep the insulin from triggering from the carbs.'

There are meal replacement shakes, and once a day, he gets 'real food'. For example, fatty fish, like salmon, is a smaller portion, but a leaner fish he gets a larger serving in ounces.

He and a RNFA (RN First Assist) were talking restaurants during a case. I had never heard of any of these places. Together they went on and on about amazing places, many of whom I can't recall the names. And Kaena wines are supposed to be amazing...

Here is one place:  http://www.innoftheseventhray.com

(just in case that 'Seventh Ray' sounds a little, well, um, metaphysical, it IS! It's the ray of St. Germain. More here: http://www.ascension-research.org/germain.html)

I couldn't help remembering when in my Family Practice rotation I had to attend an open AA meeting--listening to the conversation about restaurants really reminded me of this---except 'fine dining' was in the 'alcohol' role...

And yet the transformation of him is undeniable--as he sheds the weight, his energy body is throwing off SO much more Light. It is contagious, and totally amazing to witness the transformation with my Reiki Eyes.

I've sent a lot of Reiki to him while he operates. I send it to everyone in the room, including my patient...

<3

So at the Doctor's Dining Room, I sat eating my lunch.

I had meat.

My friend, the gastroenterologist who has been vegetarian for eight years, saw what was on my plate.

It felt awful.

I explained to him how I am eating meat now, because of my boy. We are on the insulin resistance diet--he needs it, and I am doing it with him for moral support. But I haven't lost any weight on it, and I hate meat. I never enjoy it.

He was kind.

He also shared that he doesn't trust his appetite.

So he takes the food he wants, and only eats half. The rest he throws away. That is how he says trim.

This set up a lively conversation as the cardiologist who is head of the Medical Staff, a man I really admire and enjoy, overheard us.

'Humans are the only mammal that drinks the milk of another species.' the cardiologist said with a smile, his education and intellect sparkling, as he jumped into the foray.

And the gastroenterologist, said that we drink milk as a society much longer than the animals would, who wean at the loss of their milk teeth.

He drinks almond milk, the gastroenterologist.

(At the store today, I compared--there is like, NO protein in the soy, almond and coconut milks! )

Then the cardiologist, cutting his single piece of chicken breast on his otherwise empty plate, looked up and added, 'Who knows how our bodies were designed? To eat meat? To not?'

And the gastroenterologist, said, 'We have the enzymes for the digestion of meat. I love meat. I love the taste of it. I enjoy it. But I do not eat because I do not think we have the right to kill animals for pleasure. For survival perhaps, but that is not necessary at this time. There are plant based alternatives. Man is the only creature who kills for pleasure, for sport.'

He likes to think there is one less cow and twenty less chickens killed a year because of his vegan eating habits. He morally does not see a problems with eggs and dairy, but chooses not to eat them because of the poor living conditions for the animals, who are treated as commodities and not spiritual beings which they are.

I don't know.

Survival.

I am eating meat for the survival of my son, who interprets my eating different from him as a form of rejection.

In fact, he is now more open to trying new foods, and eating vegetables, now that I eat meat and take the pressure of 'converting him' off.

The gastroenterologist gave me his extra half of his sandwich. I ate it for dinner. I was still working late.

His kindness meant the most to me of all.

I think I will eat meat only in the presence of my son, and go back to my preference when I am alone.

I never liked meat.

My parents had to force me to eat it.

I Want To Know How To Be Vegetarian!

Yesterday was a major victory for the Light in the Doctor's Dining Room.

I didn't want to eat there. I'd had a late breakfast. I usually don't like the company, but Spirit 'nudged' me to go.

About a year and a half ago, I put up a bright white vortex in the middle of the Doctor's Dining Room at my work.

Since then, one surgeon Dr. Joe L has made a book on holistic cancer treatment. Several have shared they are vegetarians. And Chef there is working with me to bring new vegetarian options to the menu for here, the cafeteria, and the patient food...

I sat with my boss, a gastroenterologist, and a nephrologist. Later, a neurologist came and sat with us.

To my left, the gastroenterologist is 'almost vegan'. When asked by the nephrologist, who is 'wants to know more', we learned the GI doc avoids all animal cruelty. Except for pizza--where there is cheese--he skips all animal products. However, he still likes and craves meat. He said, 'I have two stars, for being vegan, while (me) she has one star for being vegetarian.'

My reason is selfish. I eat to have more energy. (The maximum amount of Light energy in food is in organic plant-based RAW food--I try this as much as possible, but my son eats meat and meals are difficult to prepare separately--so I compromise as vegetarian.) I can do a twenty-four hour OB shift and keep my energy up throughout if I eat RAW and have naps. For me, I do not crave meat in any way. It tastes like cardboard if I taste it now, and the vibration is just uncomfortable. I see images of the dead animal, sense the cruelty, and don't enjoy how my body feels when I have it. Because of my extremely low Vitamin D (I didn't supplement when I went RAW), I eat salmon (it's my medicine an d I force myself) and once in a while, eggs.

'Well, what about sushi? That's raw fish?' the nephrologist asked. The Gastroenterologist and I explained all meat is more difficult to digest, and has toxins. While RAW (which is new to the GI doc, who had a 'bad experience' at 119 degrees restaurant) contains enzymes within the food to help with the digestion. Digesting meat takes a lot of work!

My boss countered with his daughter, who is graduating from University and going to France to study abroad--has a daughter who has been vegetarian for five years and is exploring her options to resume eating meat, since in all of Europe, vegetarians are not exactly 'embraced' for their lifestyle, and there is 'so much good things to discover' there. He seemed proud, and he ate his meat and fish at the table in front of us. This is the second time he's been exposed to our non-meat ways, and also at the fund-raiser he learned I am a new vegetarian...when I sat across the table from him and asked for a special plate that did not contain meat.

On a napkin, I wrote for the nephrologist:

  • Avoid Pesticides--no GMO, have Organic only food (look for the 9 on the sticker on your produce to know it is okay. Mother's Market in Southern California is a good place to shop.)
  • Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Avoid meat, perhaps one day a week at first
  • Listen to your body
  • Supplement with B12 and Vitamin D
  • Drink fresh, clear, filtered water

Then I asked him about the safety of indocyanine green dye when injected retrograde through a nephrostomy tube for imaging into the kidney during surgery. I wanted to know if it was nephrotoxic or damaging to the collecting system. He said it's in the tubules (I think) and safe, and doesn't have much contact time, so not to worry.

I saw how asking that question helped him to trust, to go to what he understands, and to help maintain the professional relationship with me without feeling like I am trying to 'turn him into something new'.

He said his wife loves tofu, and although she eats meat, they look forward to the Vietnamese Vegan restaurant I recommend...

This is how we achieve gain for The Light--by showing up, and being Present for whoever needs what we are. With open hearts and open minds, together, we will change the world for the better!

Update On The Vegan Hospital Food Project ((( woo hoo! )))

As requested, last night I informed the hospital chef by text that I would have time to eat lunch in the Doctor's Dining Room today.

I am his guinea pig for RAW vegan and vegan options for the hospital. He is working on recipes!

The phone rang at 11:15 a.m. Come to the doctor's dining room.

Inside a little black styrofoam box was a salad with what looked like chicken but it was fake. It tasted like the real thing! But it wasn't! The salad had apple slices, jicama, good lettuce blend, and vinaigrette dressing.

I was smart.

I made it 'Show and Tell'.

I came to the Doctors Dining room armed with packages of WrawP brand Raw Vegan Flat Bread, Spirulina flavor (six ounce package, four slices, cost about eight dollars), Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts brand raw shelled hemp seeds (ten grams of omegas three and six per serving), and Himalania brand antioxidant RAW Goji Berries.

You should have seen chef's face. And my colleague, the Vietnamese (here is her story http://reikidoc.blogspot.com/2013/07/reflections-on-boat-people.html), and the vegetarian who loves animals and won't eat meat but loves the taste of meat Persian Gastroenterologist!

What the heck is THIS?????

It was the delight of pure joy to discover something new to eat.

I offered tastes of the fake chicken and what I brought. The Persian asked politely where he could buy it. (he and his wife eat lots of fake chicken and it 'isn't nearly as good'). It turns out it is restaurant 'special order' only, but chef graciously offered to cook up the other piece he had back in the kitchen.

I sat next to the Persian doctor, and he enjoyed his lunch very much. I sat next to the Vietnamese anesthesiolgist, too. We were across from an Egyptian internist. He tried the fake chicken, and said it wasn't bad! Even HE was happy to have new choices! The Vietnamese says she 'Likes meat!' and I smiled and confided, 'some people NEED it, and that's okay. We just want to have more options for vegan and vegetarian patients, doctors, visitors, and staff. I am the guinea pig, that's all'. The Vietnamese lady anesthesiologist also worked with a doctor in San Diego who wrote the book Super Foods, went on Oprah, and became totally famous! He looked twenty years younger than he was and enjoyed excellent health!

Then who came and sat next to us? The author of Conquering Cancer. Did you know eighty-five percent of all cancers are preventable--they are not 'just genetic'? He says it is due to alcohol, tobacco, obesity, and 'where you live' (environmental factors). Apparently Japanese women have very low rates of breast cancer, but 'bring them here and after five years they get it just like us.' He also shared the mystery over stomach cancer in Japan, but not here. I shared that there are two subtypes of helicobacter pylori, and the Japanese one is more aggressive. The gastroenterologist looked at me--yo, anesthesia! the 'party' doctor LOL--with new respect because I was right. I laughed and said I learned it from someone who says since westerners have 'friendlier' h pylori we should 'kiss a Japanese and save a life' so they get our 'good h pylori' too. He totally cracked up. (Here's the link to the blog post and video on that--http://reikidoc.blogspot.com/2013/10/something-to-add-stomach-cancer.html)

He asked me if I meditate mindfully or mindlessly. I was like, what?! (Apparently mine is mindfully because I do it when I drive. He used to during a long commute as well.) Right then my boss sat at the table. (Blush!). Caught red-handed with my goji berries, hemp seeds AND the raw vegan bread. Yes, Dr. Boss, this one has a 'case' that is WAY worse than not having the steak and fish at the black tie fundraising gala banquet! LOL LOL LOL

Fortunately, he is very financially motivated, and another 'worldy' doc sat down too, and they talked 'business' while the Persian and I quietly discussed meditation. (I noted that Boss and other ate salad--that vortex in the Doctor's Dining Room I put in last year is really WORKING BEAUTIFULLY! LOL)

Here's the scoop--mindless meditation gets you to the 'bliss' the gastroenterologist used to need twenty minutes to 'find' in TWO MINUTES! And instead of fifteen minutes 'result' with mindful meditation, he gets it in 'five'. He suggested this book, which I just bought on Kindle, 'Silence Your Mind' by Dr. Manesh Ranoja. He says it is an Australian doctor who studies meditation quantitatively, like a medication--its effects on Blood Pressure, etc. 'It is Science, not gobble-de-gook' the gastroenterologist said.

He also shared that through Dahn yoga, he was able to heal his right knee that was so bad he almost needed a knee replacement.

I asked him another question--is your wife into meditation too? How does that work?

She is. They 'each do their own thing' and she likes Sahaja yoga for her mindless meditation. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahaja_Yoga)

I laugh now because I shared I do kundalini yoga with Ana Brett and Ravi Singh on amazon prime instant video at home on my computer, and that I love kundalini. No wonder why he said I need to go join his wife!

The end result is that he said, 'This vegetarian project never would have happened without your effort' with gratitude towards me.

And I did not disclose I am in Conquering Cancer with Reiki (just one page!). But I did share about my being a Reiki Master. I got his respect again with that--I saw his whole face change. I mentioned briefly, too, my blogging, the international interest in what I post, and my keeping it on the 'down low'--but that the point is to bring the Spiritual back into medicine, and for the Healers to Unite across all disciplines for the benefit of humanity globally to reduce suffering, illness, and encourage health for all. I sincerely shared with him how our lunch is going to give so many people hope! How so many think we are in medicine for the wrong reasons. He understood. He said, 'Actually, many doctors are the smartest ones--the most educated and the most forward-thinking. Some are clearly in it 'for the money and chasing the money' but others are in it for humanity and 'the money washes over them' because they are helping others to have less suffering.'

His story of how he came to medicine is worth a moment. He was going to be electrical engineer. But in Iran, all the universities closed for two years. The only one to reopen was medicine after that time. He sat for the entrance exam to practice test taking. He scored so well, he got accepted! So her enrolled, thinking he 'could take the general requirements and be six months ahead of the engineering school when it opened and transfer.'. What happened and why is he in the Doctor's Dining Room eating lunch next to me? On the first day of medical school, everyone calls you 'doctor'--your family, the school, people in the community. He said to himself, 'Are you crazy? This is really a good thing!' and he finished his studies to complete his M.D.!

I gave him the biggest hug! All these years we have worked together. I thought he ate meat until about three months ago. And he thought I was just, well, you know... a 'gas passer' (the nickname for anesthesiologists in the hospital LOL).

This is what my Heaven looks like. It is Here and Now, and the Energy and Joy is immense and highly contagious!!!!

P.S. This gastroenterologist is the same one Spirit guided me to ask about High Colonic Hydrotherapy in this blog--funny how Spirit 'knows' when we 'don't', isn't it? http://reikidoc.blogspot.com/2013/10/something-to-add-swollen-colon.html
